Signatures Have Quietly Become Obsolete

Big financial moments used to be marked with a signature—buying a house, a car, or even paying for a meal. But in today’s digital age, as of 2018, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express no longer require signatures for most purchases. “From 14 April 2018, EMV-enabled merchants in the U.S. and Canada have the option to stop capturing signatures as a method of cardholder verification. Those same merchants will also no longer be required to retain and store transaction receipts” – Visa

While signatures may seem like a relic, many businesses still ask for them, especially on card receipts at restaurants or bars. Why? Some customers expect it, or older systems include the line by default. However, payment networks and tech have made it clear: signatures aren’t needed to prevent fraud anymore.
